Amethyst is considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness, which is why wine goblets were often carved from it!  It was also used in ancient China as a powerful tool to clear negative energy and protect the wearer from disease and evil thoughts. It also promotes peace of mind as it is associated with the crown or "bliss" chakra.
